Spontaneous Travel Photography - How to Find Beauty Anywhere You Go

The boys and I have visited 48 out of 50 US states over the last four years. We have taken countless road trips and I have taken 1000’s of photos. Some of my best memories and most remarkable photos however, come from spectacularly spontaneous moments when we weren’t planning on visiting a location or seeing a landscape, wildlife, etc. Spontaneous travel photography is exploration at its best. The chance to catch something unexpected just because you had your camera always ready and willing to take a chance on something unknown. I thought it would be fun to share some of our favorite spontaneous moments from our years of travel below.
On our way to Yosemite National Park, we made a wrong turn and saw signs for Bodie Ghost Town. Who can pass up a ghost town in California? So, not knowing what we would find, we followed the signs, hopped out of the van, and with camera in tow, we proceeded to capture some amazing photos we would not have normally found.
Montezuma’s Castle was another spontaneous photography adventure, same story as above. We were driving to the Grand Canyon North Rim, saw signs and decided to take an adventure.
Roaming photography doesn’t always have to be a unique place you find though, it can sometimes be finding amazing and unique photo opps where you already happen to be. For example, Yellowstone National Park is perhaps one of the best places for roaming/spontaneous travel photography. No matter where you look, there is something incredible to take a photo of. From wildlife to spouting geysers, it is best just to have your camera at the ready and let yourself roam free.
