Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Themed Tea at the Chesterfield Mayfair #FamilyTravel

3:14 AM

Having a proper English afternoon tea has always been high on my list of things to do when visiting London. However, it is not something that I thought would be possible when visiting with four boys, three of which are currently teenagers who would rather be caught dead than doing anything perceived as "girly." That's why I was thrilled to learn of the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory themed afternoon tea available at the posh yet kid-friendly Chesterfield Mayfair London hotel. It was just the thing I needed to fulfill my dream of a fancy tea, coupled with a fun experience that the boys ended up raving about.

Upon entering, we were swiftly escorted through the lavishly decorated dining room to a garden-like tea room before being greeted with our own mini, fizzy lifting drinks, a cream soda mixture complete with popping candy. We enjoyed our treat and perused the extensive tea list. The boys appreciated being able to each choose their own type of tea, and for those who are not fans of tea, milkshakes are available. I went with a traditional Earl Gray tea, Joshua chose Yellow Gold Oolong tea, Jordan went with a vanilla milkshake, Jayden had the Chesterfield Afternoon Blend and Jase selected the Willy Wonka tea with hints of chocolate.

The setting on the table was beautiful, and the boys marveled at the mixture of white and brown sugar cubes in the sugar dish, complete with mini tongs. I was surprised by how much they took to the rituals and niceties that went along with the afternoon tea.

Next, two trays of refreshments were brought to the table laden with a wide array of treats. Jase my youngest went straight for the Wonka Bar, while I opted for the selection of sandwiches. The sandwiches on offer included a Scottish smoked salmon with cream cheese, cucumber with cream cheese, free range egg mayonnaise and watercress, roast chicken with grain mustard mayonnaise and nibbed almonds and my personal favorites, the honey roast ham with cheddar cheese and tomato chutney on onion bread.

There were also fresh chocolate chip and fruit scones served with Cornish clotted cream and homemade strawberry jam.

Lastly, there was a layer of sweets on top. I would be lying if I didn't say this was the layer that interested the boys the most. There were blueberry macaroons, Fizzy Lifting cake, a golden egg, Oompa Loompa cupcakes and of course the chocolate Wonka bar.

I was worried the boys would get restless after a few minutes at the afternoon tea, but we were there for about two hours, and they enjoyed themselves the entire time. There are enough whimsical touches to keep children engaged at the Charlie and the Chesterfield Afternoon Tea, but also enough to make it enjoyable for adults as well. In fact, most of the tables surrounding us were groups of adults enjoying themselves immensely, so do not hesitate to visit with or without children.

It would be a shame not to mention the service of the staff at the Chesterfield Mayfair. From the doorman to the server, there was never a hesitation to help in any way, and the service went a long way to ensuring that we had the most wonderful experience possible.

Toward the end of our meal, the "Mad Hatter" came along with golden tickets for us to choose from his hat, these were prizes to be used on our next visit, but are only valid if you do not open them before you return. We were also bid farewell with our choice of Everlasting Gobstopper and a great photo opp with the Hatter himself.

Charlie and the Chesterfield Afternoon Tea is available daily from 1pm to 5:30om. The price for the Traditional Afternoon Tea with a Twist which we enjoyed is 36.50 pounds per person, but other versions are available. For full information, visit ChesterfieldMayfair.com.
