Endless Outdoor Fun at Wintergreen Resort in Virginia #70DayRoadTrip #Travel
6:00 AMNestled high on the slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia, you will find a mountain top retreat that provides endless amounts of outdoor fun for the family all year long. Wintergreen Resort is a premier four-season resort, featuring 11,000 acres of condominiums and spacious vacation homes that fit in seamlessly with the natural scenery and wildlife of the area. Here, families can enjoy a wealth of outdoor fun no matter what time of year it might be. The boys and I visited Wintergreen Resort in July, and can testify that their warmer weather activities are every bit as enjoyable as their winter ones.
Archery
The very first activity we enjoyed at Wintergreen Resort during our visit, apart from watching the groundhogs scurry across the backyard of our vacation condo, was archery. Down by the Adventure Center is an archery field that accommodates up to ten archers. Geared towards ages 8 and up, you are given basic instruction, and then are allowed several supervised rounds of shooting at targets. Archery sessions are Tuesday and Thursday-Sunday at 2:30, 3:30 and 4:30. The instructor was so patient with the boys, and by the end of our hour, most of their arrows were hitting the targets.
Summer Tubing
Who says the tubing fun has to end once the snow has melted? Summer tubing is a great way to get the sensation of snow tubing, without the snow. The track is made from Neveplast, and the special tubes just slide right down it at thrilling speeds. You travel over the length of three football fields at high speeds, and the best part is, there is a moving platform to carry you back to the top, so you can slide some more without getting tired!
Zip-Lining
The Zip at Wintergreen Resort sends you speeding for 900 feet up to 40 mph in under 30 seconds! Don't worry, there is a safety video and trained professionals to get you all harnessed up first. I love that this was just a one zip track. It is a great starter zip if this is your first time. My oldest is 14, and it was his first time. In fact, he went alone since I needed to watch his brothers, and he wanted to do it again and again.
Bungee Trampoline
If I had not been over the weight limit, this is where I likely would have spent the majority of my time at Wintergreen Resort, it looked like so much fun! Suit up and enjoy high flying bouncy fun on these trampolines, you can even get adventurous and try a flip!
Miniature Golfing and Rock Climbing
There are so many outdoor activities for families at Wintergreen Resort that we didn't even have time to enjoy them all during our visit. Miniature golfing and rock climbing are available at the adventure center throughout the day, and while we did not have the chance to try them out, we did see many families enjoying them during our stay.
Lake Monocan
Lake Monocan is another section of Wintergreen Resort known as Stoney Creek that is located a short 15-20 minute ride down the mountain in the valley. Here among two distinctly different golf course, boasting the highest elevation of any golf courses in Virginia, lies that 20 acre lake and park.
In addition to the beach area where lounge chairs, volleyball court and picnic areas can be found, there are also many outdoor activities available. Kayaks, canoes, aqua cycles, fishing equipment and even bike rentals are available here, and don't forget the playground in the water complete with trampolines and slides. You definitely need to plan at least one full day to explore all the activities found here.
Take It Indoors
While I've mentioned a lot of the outdoor activities that are available at Wintergreen Resort, the Adventure Center also has an indoor area where there is a mechanical bull, bounce house, pool table, video games and more fun-filled activities that can come in handy when the weather isn't cooperating, or mom and dad just need a place to sit and relax while the kids have fun.
Additional Activities for Kids
Lawn games, movie nights and the kid's day care Treehouse Program are just a few of the other activities for kids that Wintergreen Resort has to offer. If mom and dad need a little alone time. The Treehouse program offers both full and half day programs for ages 2 1/2 to 12. The resort also features both an indoor and outdoor pool, and hiking in the gorgeous mountains is always free and fun too.
Mountains of Adventure Pass
The best way to experience a variety of different activities at Wintergreen Resort, is with their Mountains of Adventure Pass. Each pass entitles you to unlimited use of the aquatic and fitness centers, seasonal entry into Lake Monocan, miniature golfing and hiking on over 30 miles of trails. In addition, you can choose five adventures from the activities found at the Adventure Center and two adventures from the activities available at Lake Monocan. You can share a few passes among an entire family instead of buying everyone their own too. This is a great way to save for families. The passes run $29 for the Spring and Fall passes, and $34 for the summer.
Wintergreen Resort is really a one stop vacationing spot for families who love outdoor activities. With so much fun for the family to explore together, you may have to visit more than once to be able to fit everything in. To help plan your visit, you can go to WintergreenResort.com.
