Best Homeschool Math Curriculum for Early Learners

As a homeschooling mom of four boys, I am always on the look out for new teaching resources. Since we do not use a box curriculum and instead, pick and choose from a variety of resources, it takes some trial and error to find the programs that work best for us. In addition to core teaching curriculum, I also like to find a variety of extra resources that can be used to help supplement for extra practice. The programs listed below are those that we either have used like Saxon math, those we are interested in using like Life of Fred, or those that I have heard recommended by others.
Life of Fred 4-Book Elementary Set # 1 : Apples, Butterflies, Cats, Dogs
Melissa & Doug Classic Wooden Abacus
This wooden “calculator” helps teach math skills, patterning and color recognition. Slide and count the beads with this timeless counting frame. Fun activity ideas included!
Singapore Math Practice
This workbook features math practice and activities for first and second grade students based on the Singapore Math method. Level A is designed for the first semester and Level B is for the second. An introduction at the front of each book explains Singapore Math and its common problem types. Each unit has learning objectives, which clearly define the skills to be learned in that section, and an answer key with step-by-step worked out solutions that help students see how to work the problems.
Learning Wrap Ups - Multiplication
Grades 1 - 3. Learn math skills by wrapping string from the problem on the left to the answer on the right. Turn it over and see if your answers are correct. This multiplication set contains 10 self correcting keys.
Painless Fractions
This book shows students how to play many different fascinating numbers games, such as Dazzling Division of fractions, which makes numbers grow larger when they are divided! Painless Fractions is filled with intriguing "Brain Ticklers" and complemented with humorous illustrations. Titles in Barron's extensive Painless Series cover most subjects taught on middle school and high school levels, and are written for students who find the subjects unusually difficult and confusing--or in some cases, just plain boring.
School Zone Big Math 1-2
Here's where it all begins to add up! Early math skills are also life skills, and the Big Math 1-2 Workbook is packed with exercises that make learning fun. These proven activities will help your child be successful in school by teaching addition, subtraction, story problems, time, money, fractions, multiplication, and more. Imagination meets real-world problem-solving. We used The Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, published by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), as a guide in writing this book.
Mathtacular Educational Kit
MathTacular Educational Kit gives you the manipulatives you need to get the most from the included MathTacular Manipulatives DVD. You also get a Math Manipulatives Guide which shows you how to get the most from each of the manipulatives included in this kit. This package is distinct from MathTacular. The DVD included in your Educational Kit contains most of the activities included in MathTacular, but focuses on the activities which can be done with the included manipulatives.
Saxon Math 1 Homeschool: Complete Kit 1st Edition
Horizons Math 2 - Workbooks 1 & 2
