When I was trying to think of a lesson plan for my co-op Pre-K class last week, all I could keep coming back to was beans. The boys always loved the experiment in Kindergarten where they would plant their own beans plant to take home and watch it grow, so building on that idea, I created a lesson plan that featured beans and how they grow.

Book: Jack and the Beanstalk (I had a pop-up book, but you could use any version you have.)


Craft: B is for Bean craft. (Draw a capital and lowercase B on card stock paper and write "B is for Bean" at the top. Trace the letter B's with a thin line of glue and let kids trace them in beans.)

Learning Activities:


1. Life cycle of a bean mobile. Print the bean sprout sequencing cards from Enchanted Learning. Cut four pieces of yarn with four different lengths, each a little longer then the last. Attach them to a wooden dowel or stick in order from shortest to longest. As the kids color them, tie them in sequence order to create a mobile that represents the life cycle of a bean.

2. Largest to Smallest bean activity. I created my own bean themed largest to smallest worksheet since I couldn't find one that was what I wanted. You can grab the worksheet I made here. Have a variety of different sized beans and have the children glue them in the boxes largest to smallest.


Observe: Plant a bean. In a clear plastic cup or jar, soak several paper towels and place them inside. Place 2-3 bean seeds in cup or jar between the wet paper towels and sides of the container so they can get water, but the kids can watch them grow.
