Are You Taking Care of Your Children?
6:00 AMThis post was written for Genworth Insurance in cooperation with Brandfluential. All words, thoughts and opinions are my own.
This sounds like a pretty crass question. Your answer more than likely is "Of course I am!" However, your answer may need to be a little more in-depth. I take great care of my boys. I homeschool three of them, make sure they have clothes to wear, good food to eat, take them places, build memories and even spoil them rotten from time to time. Unfortunately, when I really dig down, I may not be caring for them as completely as I should be.
When I was married to my ex-husband, I let him take care of everything. He had life insurance when we were married and I was a stay-at-home mom for the most part. If something happened to him we would be set, but what if something happened to me? Fast forward, and my ex-husband passed away in 2008. At that time he had no insurance, but since I was already the sole breadwinner for the boys, it didn't affect us. However, I have to ask myself again, but what if something happens to me?
What about you? Have you made sure your children will be taken care of should something happen to you?

We haven't taken care of them completely when it comes to life insurance. We really need to reevaluate our situation and plan accordingly.
ReplyDeleteGenworth makes ir really simle to determine how much you need. That is what made me realize I really have any excuse to put it off any longer.
DeleteI'm really glad they have "the math" on their website to help figure out the amount. That part is super confusing to me. I want to make sure I have enough!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more Liz. I had no idea how much I would need and the whole process seemed really daunting, but they really simplify it.
DeleteYou're absolutely right. It's lousy to think about, but it's necessary. We all want the best for our kids and making sure they're taking care of in the event of something tragic happening is so important!
ReplyDeleteYep, it's something that is easy to push to the back burner and forget, but something that is so important to make sure our families are taken care of.
DeleteI think this is the absolutely best way to phrase this to a parent who thinks life insurance is something they really don't need. You said it pretty succinctly and to the point!
ReplyDeleteThat's because I am guilty of being one of those parents. Unfortunately being taken from our children is not something most of us like to consider, but it is a neccessity.
DeleteIt's a scary thought but I have tried to put things in order if something were to happen to my husband and I.
ReplyDeleteI really should get better coverage.
ReplyDeleteI am pretty much in the same boat. I should be able to afford to start considering life insurance next year.
ReplyDeleteThis is something that we really need to start looking into. Angeline is off to college in two years, but even so, we don't have a will or LTC yet. We do have life insurance on both of us, though. So at least that's a start!
ReplyDeleteThat has been my biggest problem too Robin. I looked though, and some of the plans now are so affordable!
ReplyDeleteI never thought I could afford life insurance before
ReplyDeleteI think a lot of people think that way Katherine, I know I did, but Genworth has a whole calculator that can tell you just how much it would cost for the coverage you need. Mine would be less than $30 per month to provide for my kids to go to college, pay off my home and debts, replace my income for 10 years and pay funeral expenses! https://www.genworth.com/products/life-insurance/how-much-life-insurance-do-i-need/life-insurance-calculator.html?iid=gnw:Home:tab:Life:UseLifeInsurancecalculator
ReplyDeleteI've been fortunate, my husband handles all of the financial stuff in our lives and did buy life insurance for me, but at this moment, it wouldn't be enough to keep their heads above water for very long if I died before the kids have grown up.
ReplyDeleteSome is better than none Cat, but you would be surprised how cheap it can be to add on additional coverage. Plus, if you claim taxes, which most people do, social security death benefits help minor children in addition to life insurance policies.
ReplyDeleteYou know I never really thought too much about life insurance for myself. My husband has a policy but I don't. Thank you for the information and reminder that I need to get one!
ReplyDeleteI do think life insurance is more affordable than most people think.
ReplyDeleteBoth my parents didn't have it.. and I really wish they did. We were left with absolutely nothing at the ages of 21 and 18 (my sister and I) this is so very important..
ReplyDeleteBoth my husband and I need policies.
ReplyDeleteWe have policies and still feel guilty/weird about it; I'm hoping with time that will fade.
ReplyDeleteThat is a very good thing to think about. Not only if you have enough life insurance to take care of them, but WHO will take care of them if something happened to you.
ReplyDeleteThis is one thing my husband has been adamant about maintaining -- life insurance on both of us. Since he works with retirement planning, he sees a lot of families that have to deal with the aftermath of no life insurance and no way to care for their financial needs.
ReplyDeleteI honestly haven't thought much of life insurance, but you put everything into perspective. This is something to really think about!
ReplyDeleteI often wonder if I am taking care of my kids as well as I could but definitely agree how important life insurance it is.
ReplyDeleteI love the Genworth site because they make it easy to do the math for insurance. We have been talking about it a lot lately but haven't made the jump yet.
ReplyDeleteMy husband wants us to sit down and start working this stuff out
ReplyDeleteI have a policy worth twice my salary, but I'm thinking of increasing it. If someone else had to care for Levi in case anything happened to me, I want to make sure he's well provided for.
ReplyDeleteI have a policy, but I should really double check coverage.
ReplyDeleteThey would SO not be taken care of. Hubs would be in a lurch until he remarried. LOL. I need to take a policy out on myself stat.
ReplyDeleteWe all have life insurance, even the littles. I pray we never have to use it, but it is there just in case.
ReplyDeleteIt's a scary idea that one of us would pass away. We have life insurance on my hubby and I and also small policies on the kids.
