Have You Ever Known Hunger? - Fight Hunger Together with Walmart
6:00 PM
This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Walmart for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.
Have you ever known hunger? The truth is, 1 in 6 Americans will have no idea where their next meal comes from at some point in the year. Yes, I said Americans, people in our very own country. This month is national Hunger Action Month and Walmart is taking a stand to help fight hunger by working with associates, customers and suppliers to donate up to 53 million meals to Feeding America as well as giving $2.5 million towards hunger relief.
{My Hunger Story}
There was a time shortly after I left my ex-husband that I was one of the 1 in 6 Americans who had no idea where my next meal would come from. I was living at my parents home while they were away for the summer and I had about $10 to my name. Their house was in the middle of nowhere and I used the last of my money to put gas in the car and drive into the city to beg at the food pantries for anything that I could use to feel my two young children and myself at the time. The little bit of food I was able to secure I gave to the boys and I can remember eating a box of angel food cake for myself for about three days, because I didn't want to take the wholesome food away from them. Probably the reason I hate angel food cake today.
Luckily, we made it out of those hard times, but I will never ever forget the feeling of not knowing where the food would come from, or how I would feed my boys. That is why this cause is so close to my heart and I am so thankful for companies like Walmart who are working with consumers and brands to work towards Fighting Hunger Together.
Now through October 12th, you can help Walmart fight hunger. Visit your local Walmart store and find the "Fighting Hunger Together" signs where you will find products from brands like General Mills. You can follow the directions on the packaging to go to "Give Meals" section of Walmart.com/hunger and turn 1 product into 7 meals. You can also use the mobile app to generate free meals through Feeding America.
You can also participate in the Golden Spark promotion. Visit the Walmart site to enter to win a $50,000 grant for your community to be used towards starting or expanding a backpack program to help provide weekend meals to children who do not have access to free or reduced lunch at school during that time. There will be 40 of these Golden Sparks randomly awarded to help communities nationwide!
Be sure to check out the Walmart.com/hunger site and see all the different ways you can help fight hunger through October 12th.
