Excuse Me While I Interrupt Your Conversation and Poke You

11:07 AM

While scouring the #BlogHer12 hashtag on Twitter and responding to conversations, I started to wonder. Are social media networks breeding bad manners? I mean, every time I respond to a tweet I see I feel like I am interrupting someone's conversation. Were they talking to me? Do they want me to respond? Who the heck knows? I mean, it is out there for the world to see, but what happens when you tweet in response to a previous tweet between two people in a public hashtag? Isn't that the equivalent of walking up to two people on the street and putting your two cents into their conversation?

Don't get me wrong, I love social media and will continue to tweet, it was just food for thought. Or how about Facebook and their poking action. Why are we poking each other? What does a poke even do other than make the pokie think "Why did that person just poke me?" You wouldn't go up to someone on the street and poke them then run off would you?

What do you think?

  1. this is funny but has happened to me too. I sometimes wonder if I should jump in or not. Nothing like being socially awkward in social media eh?

  2. Exactly Heather. Who cares though, I just throw my opinion in there anyway. :)

  3. I like it when people do that! There's not enough live conversation on Twitter, so when people actually talk, I am happy!

  4. I have 2 friends on FB that we poke each other. Sometimes several times a day, sometimes we skip a few days... but it's our way of saying, "Hi", and to let each other know we're okay. I've never poked anyone else but these 2 friends. It's our little private thing. :)

  11. LOL! I guess I'm rude because I don't care who you're talking to. I assume if we're following each other then you want to Tweet with me.

  14. That's why I am so socially awkward when it comes to social media. I don't really talk to people on sites, such as Twitter or Facebook, unless they're saying something to me. I guess I am weird. ;-)

  16. I feel like the rules of etiquette have changed. It seems like it may have been awkward to jump in a few years ago, in the early days of social media, but now that most people are such heavy users it's become the norm (and totally welcomed.)

  20. I think responding to tweets is cool but I've never quite understood the poking. Yet every day the same folks poke me. I never initiate it but I do poke them back. I feel like for some reason I should or I'm ignoring them lol.
