Pregnant? Bet You Didn't Know to Avoid Some of These Foods

7:11 AM

Okay, so it has been a while since I was last pregnant. Six years to be exact. So, I am learning a thing or two about what foods are now on the "do not eat" list when you are pregnant. Some of these I knew about, but some threw me for a loop. None of them should be too hard for me to avoid though, so at least that is a good thing.

Foods to Avoid:

Lunch Meats - If you are going to eat lunch meat when pregnant, it is recommended that you heat it up until it is steaming.

Uncooked Meats - Raw meats, seafood or uncooked hot dogs.

Raw Cookie Dough - I love me some raw cookie dough, but I think I can avoid it for 9 months.

Fish with High Mercury Content - Shark, Swordfish, Tilefish

Refrigerated Smoked Seafood

Meat Spreads and Pates

Runny Eggs - Make sure egg whites and yolks are firm when cooked

Pre-stuffed Meat or Poultry

Unpasteurized Foods - this includes soft cheeses like Brie and Feta when they are not clearly marked as being pasteurized.

Foods to Limit:

Caffeine - A lot of things have caffeine that I did not necessarily think about before, including chocolate substances like pudding and hot cocoa, as well as herbal teas.

Canned Tuna- It is recommended that you have no more than one 6oz. can per week.

High Nitrate Foods - Such as bacon and sausage.

  7. When I was pregnant I craved eggs over easy. Luckily, I knew I couldn't eat eggs this way. It was one of the first things I ate after I came home from the hospital after having my son, though. :)

  13. The nice thing about being in the States is that all of our cheeses are pasteurized. Only imported cheeses may or may not be pasteurized.
