The Post in Which I Admit Defeat and Realize I Will Never Be Martha Stewart
6:50 AMWhile I was browsing other blogger's website yesterday and secretly hating them for their domesticated ways, I started to feel guilty. There are some truly awesome women out there who were born with this innate ability to take homemaking to a competitive sport level. I say this in the nicest possible way, because I of course admire these women. I however, realize I am not one of them. That is why there are few recipes on my blog, it is light on interior decorating posts, but it is loaded with humor. Let's get something straight, I was not cut out to make adorable little Bento box lunches for the boys, I will never knit them an entire wardrobe with my bare hands and they would probably kill me in my sleep if I did, but that is just the way it is. I am never going to be a perfect mom and that's okay.
Parenthood isn't about being perfect. Just because I am not a domestic diva does not mean that my children are not loved and taken care of. I just accomplish this in a different way. The point of this post is not to knock the great homemaking women of the word, the goal is to support those whose homemaking habits are lacking. My house is clean, my kids eat three meals a day, have clean clothes and plenty of fun. At the end of the day, that is a success. I used to feel down and upset thinking about the things other moms could accomplish that I just wasn't doing. Like I wasn't putting in enough effort for my chidren. The truth is though, everyone is different, has a different life, responsibilities and a different set of things they have to do each day. Just because I am not able to do these things for my children and be the perfect homemaker does not make me any less of a parent or a woman.
So, if you are a mom who feels less than super when you gaze upon the domestic skills of others, don't. Hold your head up and walk proud, because you are just as good a mom and woman in your own way. That is unless you sit on the couch all day eating bon bons and wasting time, then you may be able to try a little harder.
Oh yeah, and if you want to get a look at some of those truly adorable bento boxes, have a look at Rachel's blog. She is utterly domestic. :)

Remember that a blog is what the person chooses it to be. Everyone has their struggles and issues. They are lying if they say they don't. Not one person in this world is perfect.
ReplyDeleteAll you can do is try. That is what I tell myself daily!
ReplyDeleteWe never know what we are capable of until we try new things.
ReplyDelete:)
Oh I do Sheila, all the time. Well, when I have the extra time. lol Sometimes they even work out really well like the fondant pirate cake I made for my 8 year old's birthday. :)
ReplyDeleteYeah, I remember the moment when I realized tha I was just not going to be vacuuming and cooking in pearls and high heel--dang June Cleaver!
ReplyDeletegirl...i actually heard the rocky themesong playing in the background as i read this post! you go girl...i think you rock like kiss!
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your candid humor. I, too, am lacking in the domestic diva category. But, my kids are well cared for and well loved. At the end of the day, that is all that matters.
ReplyDeleteI don't have an innate ability for anything lol But luckily I do have that 'work hard' gene that makes up for it. There's nothing wrong with being perfect...but there's nothing wrong with being the opposite as well :)
ReplyDeleteI figure that the love I have for my kids more than makes up for what I lack, and believe me, I lack a lot when it comes to the household!
ReplyDeleteI don't see anything wrong with sitting on the couch eating bon bons.
ReplyDeleteMartha Stewart, I most definitely am not. But, I take care of my house and kids, and I'm a pretty good cook.
ReplyDeleteYep, I get the "I want to be Martha Stewart" feeling a LOT. Then, I attempt a project and realize that I don't know how to make things pretty and it's not naturally in me to be super-neat and artistic. I have other strengths (like smart shopping!) so I need to go with those!
ReplyDeletelol jayedee! How did you know what song I was listening to when I wrote this?
ReplyDeleteSmart shopping is an amazing talent Marybeth and you rock it.
I know you ladies and I know you are all awesome in your own ways!
Yea, I gave up years ago trying to be the 'perfect' mom while juggling a career, three kids in sports etc. Now I love that my house is not to fancy that folks can keep their shoes on because we live in my house. :-)
ReplyDeleteSome days I feel totally domestic - like when I am ironing tablecloths for dinner parties...then other days, when I hire a restaurant to cater my party, I feel not-so domestic! Life is too short to sweat the small stuff.
ReplyDeleteI remember when I used to be obsessed with trying to be "super mom". It was an unreachable goal that was driving me crazy. I am now happy to be the best me I can be for my family. It has worked out much better!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a domestic diva either. Remember that Martha Stewart ended up in prison...so who wants to be her anyway, lol.
ReplyDeleteI am crazy, fun and so silly and that is what my kids love best about me! OH, and I so want to try those bento lunch boxes out and cookie cut my sons sandwiches and fruit! Those are SO CUTE!!!!
ReplyDeleteI get intimidated by some of the blogs I read to. But really, at the end of the day, they inspire me too ;)
ReplyDeletelol that's why they have bakery's and hostess!! I never feel bad. All I know is I'm arleady over loaded and I certainly don't need anything else on my plate and if I did I can order it :D
ReplyDeleteGood point Sam. Definitely don't want to be a jail bird.
ReplyDeleteKim, they are adorable. I would make them everyday if I could lol.
I totally do the bloghopping and hating all the wonderful food lol. I love looking at them all, but I know my skills will never be in the kitchen. YOUR NOT ALONE!

My motto - My house is clean enough to be healthy and dirty enough to be happy!
ReplyDeleteLol, you're so cute. And love to kids isn't measured in lunch boxes, it's in time spend together. Whether you spend it playing with them, or making them beautiful lunches, as long as it's time spent together :)
ReplyDeleteAs my name implies, I'm right there with you. :)
ReplyDeletelol Anne love the motto.
ReplyDeleteThanks for chiming in ladies. It is good to know I'm not alone.
Martha Stewart looks like she needs the stick pulled out of her butt. You don't want to be like that.
ReplyDeleteWhen I see those Bento box lunches, i always wonder what they do with the leftover food after they cut and mold the cute animals and scenes. I'd love to see how much waste there is in making one of those.
I succumbed to pressure and bought some bento boxes this fall. I haven't done anything but used them as regular lunch boxes though!
