I Survived The 30 Day Shred - What's Next?

2:43 PM

As most of you know by now, I have been doing the 30 Day Shred. Well, I am proud to say that I conquered it and finished all 30 days. Actually, it took more like 36 days to get 30 days of the actual video done because of a cold and ankle injury, but I got it done! It wasn't always fun or pretty, but I powered through and am so proud of how much stronger I have become. So what's next?

More shredding of course. I debated what I would do next. I thought about p90X and this new program that Kim at Accidental Mommies is rocking, called Insanity. In the end though, I decided to stick with the 30 Day Shred for an additional month with a 30 minute resistance program on the elliptical added in for extra fat burning! The Shred does a good job of toning and strengthening core muscle groups and I want to focus on getting stronger for the next 30 days before moving on to something more challenging.

5 Things You Need to Know Before Shredding!

1. It will kick your butt! Seriously, unless you are an avid exerciser who works out everyday, there is going to be some degree of pain and butt kicking associated with the 30 Day Shred.

2. Jillian's voice and face are annoying as hell! Yep, she drives me mad. So, after the first few days, I learned to mute her and jam on some Pandora tunes and all is well with the world. I suggest you do the same.

3. You will need to utilize what you learned in Lamaze class. Thought you would never use the Lamaze class lessons again? Well now you can put them to good use once more. Finding a focal point and using many of the same methods as I used to get through natural child birth really helped me focus and push through when I thought I could not do it anymore.

4. Some days it will suck. Okay, most days it will suck. Then one day, you will find yourself excited about your Shred time. I know, it shocked the heck out of me too. I found that I could not go to sleep knowing I had skipped a day and so I pushed myself during some late night workouts just to get it in.

5. The 30 Day Shred is not about weight loss. This is important to note. The Shred is not so much about weight loss, but more about toning. If you are looking to drop major pounds, you need to focus on more cardio. By all means do the Shred too, but don't depend on it for lots of weight loss. I lost about 4 pounds, but also lost nearly 12 inches overall!

I kept crummy records and have no before or after pictures this go around, but I am posting a picture today that will serve as my before for this next 30 days of shredding. I will post updates every 10 days as I progress to a new level so that you can hopefully see how the Shred works! I warn you though, it is not pretty and please excuse the battle wounds stretch marks.

Anyone else currently doing the 30 Day Shred or want to join in this go around?

  2. I'm about to do Day 2 of Ripped in 30. Yes I want to slap Jillian. If she tells me that a 400 lb man can do these things so I can too ONE more time.... lol. Good tip about muting her for Pandora. Going to do that now.

  3. Arena, I will have to check the video out! lol She says that about the 400 lb. man on the jumping jacks in the Shred. Told you, just mute her. :)

Mama-Beans - I would love to have you join in. Maybe I can create a linky with my updates so everyone else can share their progress too.

  4. Congrats to you! It's a tough workout for sure! I had started it again, but then had some medical issues and was banned from working out until the doctor figured things out. Thankfully, I have received the all clear to workout again (with limitations of course)!

I started weight watchers on Monday and am REALLY focused! I am alternating various workout dvds since I have to avoid certain exercises (the only way for my doctor to give me the ok) so unfortunately I cannot jump in with you. But rest assured, I will be kicking my own butt with running and all the workouts I can.

I agree, mute that woman! LOL! She is just as annoying in No More Trouble Zones, Last Chance Workout and Cardio Max!

  9. I did a 20 minute elliptical resistance program and the shred today Rhea and it was hard lol. I find that I actually like working out now, the hard part is just sticking to it long enough to get to that point without giving up. It took me several tries and many years before I could do it, but I am glad I did!

  11. Looking good!! I like your idea about turning the sound off and using your own music, I'm very motivated by listening to my own tunes when I work out.

  12. Wow! 12 inches is really good! I just ordered the 30 day shred today and can't wait to get started on it! I'm hoping to do it for a couple of months too as I really need the toning and strength. I've got some major stretch marks too, darn kids :)

  13. I just can't get past how annoying Jillian is to even try the Shred. I can't stand to even look at her. When the commercials are on for the Biggest Loser, she makes me want to punch my TV. I just don't know what it is about her. I don't feel that way about anyone else. OK, maybe Denise Austin because she talks to people on camera like they're 5.

  14. I am on the third circuit of the 30 day shred. This is my second time doing it. I did it once last year...but didn't stick to it like I have this time. I also do elliptical resistance. So far, so good. I have at least 30 pounds of baby weight I need to get off...well...it wasn't all baby weight...I put some of that on myself I guess.... :-)

  19. Good for you for making it through and for doing it again!!!!!!!!!!

Insanity is harder than anything ever invented but it's totally worth it. One thing is you have to be the type who can realize that not being able to keep up is actually a good thing in the beginning and take it as a challenge and not a reason to quit. Even the people on the videos on Insanity who are in tip-top shape have to take breaks.

I think you look great and have made some awesome progress so far, keep it up!!!!!

  20. Thanks Kim. That was one of the hardest things with the Shred, especially level 3. I had to learn that it was okay to take a 5 second break if I needed one. Once I got past that, I was able to push myself a little farther each day.
